“Rural Kansas…My Community”
Each year the North Central Regional Planning Commission (NCRPC) invites high school seniors to think about the future of rural Kansas and prepare an original work based on an annual theme. Contestants enter by submitting one of the following: a written essay, a series of photographs, or a short video.
Recognition – Cash Awards - $1000, $500, $250 (non-renewable) and publication on the EyeonKansas web site.
Our Goal is to engage the region’s young people in thoughtful reflection on rural Kansas and promote a fruitful discussion among citizens based on their insights. We want to encourage high school seniors to pause and contemplate rural Kansas prior to the milestone of high school graduation.
Eligibility - Any senior in high school who lives in and/or is attending a public or private high school which district falls in the 12 county NCPRC service area – Cloud, Washington, Clay, Lincoln, Ellsworth, Marshall, Mitchell, Ottawa, Jewell, Republic, Saline, Dickinson. Home school students in this same area may also participate.
Awards
Web-based publication at the Eye on Kansas site to winning entries.
Three cash awards of $1000, $500, and $250 to students with winning entries (non-renewable).

Criteria for submission
All entries must be submitted electronically.
Must include registration form with entry.
Employees and immediate family members of the NCRPC are not eligible.
Original entries may be in the form of a written essay, a series of photographs or a short video.
Details for Written Entries:
Written documents should be double spaced and at least 12 point font, with one-inch margins.
Personal reflection/commentary reflective of the contest theme.
At least 1,000 words of fiction or non-fiction.
Written entries should be saved as a pdf file and submitted electronically to ruralvoices@eyeonkansas.org.
Details for Photo Entries:
Photos essays should include 10 to 20 photos reflective of the contest theme.
Photos should be original taken by the person entering the contest.
Photo entries should be created at no wider than 500 pixels, with a resolution of 72 DPI, and all included as attachments in one email to ruralvoices@eyeonkansas.org.
Include a brief summary describing the photo essay with the registration form.
Details for Video Entries:
Video essays reflective of the contest theme must be no more than 10 minutes.
All work must be original, including any photos that may be incorporated into the video.
If music is used, no copyrighted music can be used without proof of written permission.
Videos should be saved and uploaded to YouTube with a link sent to ruralvoices@eyeonkansas.org.
Include a brief summary describing the video essay with the registration form.
